Depression Treatment

Most often people use a combination of medication (anti-depressant) and mental health therapy. I’ve found this to be the best for depression caused by chemical imbalance (i.e. if you’ve had these issues for a long time regardless of life changes). But if you’re feeling blue due to a change in life circumstances and you don’t feel too stuck or have thoughts of dying, mental health therapy on its own can help alleviate a lot of your symptoms. The same can go for people with seasonal affective disorder depression or self-esteem related symptoms. I always suggest seeing a doctor, however, and also meeting with a mental health therapist if you **are** prescribed a medication.

For post-partum depression, women can experience a myriad of symptoms and issues related to the chemical and life changes from having a baby. These feelings can last days to years, and can be hard to pinpoint. If you don’t feel like yourself after having a baby, always talk to your OB and get yourself a specialized postpartum depression therapist. I believe it requires a specific treatment, so find yourself someone who can help met your specific needs.
