Finding a Good Therapist Fit

EVERYBODY! I had the realization after writing my last month’s trauma posts that I am giving you ALL kinds of information about symptoms and telling you to go find yourself a therapist, but then not giving you information to find the RIGHT therapist.

Alright, so I’m gonna drop some therapy 101 knowledge on ya’ll.

Having a good fit with your therapist is going to be KEY to healing. As therapists (in general, there is always those sour lemons) we understand that you may meet us and not want to continue with us. AND we want you to tell us this! Sooner rather than later. Even though you may think hearing this will hurt our feelings, or damage our ego- sure, but in reality we would rather refer you to someone who may be a better fit than spend months in therapy only to get frustrated because your symptoms did not improve or you struggle to tell us we are too direct/not direct enough. Which we also find just as frustrating as you do. See, a good therapist is going to want to help you achieve what you want- healing and empowerment for your life. And we know that finding the right fight with a therapist is only going to help you with those end goals. AND any therapist who struggles to listen to your needs (within reason, mind you), may not be helping you. Also remember it is always okay to get a second opinion on diagnosis or treatment methods as well.

Take Home: How do you know what would make a good fit for you? Think about your favorite doctors, chiropractors, insurance agents? What do these service people all have in common that help you feel at ease or instill trust or comfort. Look for a therapist who may fit some of those qualities.
